Potassium Iodate (Ki03) may be used to maintain beneficial and protective levels
of iodine in the thyroid gland during a nuclear fallout situation. It is meant
to be used while you are evacuating the affected area, and is designed to be a
short term solution to "fill" your thyroid gland with healthy iodine so it is
not filled with bad iodine from a nuclear disaster, as the thyroid gland is one
of the first organs affected by nuclear fallout.
Because, if a nuclear event occurs and you don't have your own supply, you might
have to rely on the government to make some available to you in time. The US
government scrambled during the Japanese nuclear disaster in 2011 to find enough
product.
